Durham University draws on an unbroken tradition of scholarship that dates from the Venerable Bede in the 7th century. But it has always held forward-looking values: For example, in the 1870s, it pioneered the idea of overseas campuses, establishing two, in Barbados and Sierra Leone. Today its specialties include philosophy, information technology, English, archaeology, chemistry and music.
